gamelan (Indonesian traditional ensemble)

~ Ensemble

Description

Gamelan is basically split up in 3 traditions: the Balinese, the Sundanese and the Javanese, with each area having several different gamelan ensembles from large to small, each including a variety of instruments.
Most if not all gamelan instruments come in two scales, Sléndro and Pélog, these are tuned differently and large gamelan orchestras always include at-least one of each scale and often several sets in each.
Gamelan is an integrated part of Indonesian culture, is used in important traditions and throughout Indonesian life.
